
Houston Alexander, a.k.a. Strong Arm, is a true ambassador for Omaha hip-hop music scene, seeking to project the positive nature and true essence of the culture. Since the age of 13, he was first exposed to graffiti art in 1985 after watching the film “Beat Street,” and was immediately interested in the art form. Strong Arm launched his artistic abilities and quickly became one of the best local graffiti artist, honing his skills on structures where it was accepted and appreciated.
Strong Arm also made a name for himself with his dancing skills. After watching the 80’s pop culture film Flashdance where he was first introduced to the dance of “B-boying”, he formed the Alliance All-Stars, a dance group that performed on street corners in the Omaha Old Market and around the city. Due to rising popularly, The Alliance All-Stars launched a school to teach others the fundamentals of hip-hop dancing. The group opened for a number of concert groups on their tour stops in Omaha, including Salt-N-Pepa and Tone Loc.
Strong Arm’s popularity soared quickly and he became widely known and recognized with the younger set. His influence on their lives and his ability to persuade led him to area schools and organizations where he would give speeches about the importance of staying in school and staying away from drugs and gangs. His passion for teaching and working with the youth of today continues with his work at the YMCA with his “School of Moves.” In addition, his work is widely known from his “Culture Shock School Tour” which has been a staple in the Omaha-area schools for the past five years.
Strong Arm has been involved as a creator and co-creator of many events in the Omaha hip-hop scene. He co-created “Fresh Fest,” in 2000, an annual hip-hop competition and showcase. Today, he hosts the popular program, “Sunday Nite Heat" on POWER 106.9 airing Sunday nights from 8-10pm.
